In July 2007 the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a paper, Responses to Some Questions Regarding Certain Aspects of the Doctrine on the Church. The paper evoked some concern among Protestant churches, with some interpreted it as a statement from the Roman Catholic Church declaring that they are not recognised being part of the one holy catholic and apostolic church.Several members of the Uniting Church raised their concerns and the Vatican Document has been added to our website.
The Uniting Church Assembly has made a response to the Document and that has also been added to our website. Revd Dr sandy Yule, Secretary of the Uniting Church’s national Christian Working Group advises that the
Assembly’s response may be circulated with the following comment:
“The CUWG has no objection to synods putting it on synod web sites, suitably referenced. By all means send it out electronically to interested people. It is officially for the advice of the UCA team to the RC/UCA dialogue. My view is that it is a document in which the UCA is essentially addressing itself in the expectation of being overheard, mirroring the original Vatican document.”The advice given at the end of the UCA Response is: “For the use of the UCA Dialogue Team with the Roman Catholic Church.”We have also added an extract from a paper by Most Revd Dr Michael Putney, Roman Catholic Bishop of Townsville and a member of the Roman Catholic-Uniting Church Dialogue. It’s from Denise C Sullivan [ed] Living Ecumenism 1995, Joint Board of Christian Education, Melbourne. Bishop Putney offers an illuminating comment on the expression about “The Church of Christ subsists in…” that occurs in the Vatican Congregation’s Statement. These three documents are placed in our website’s “Documents’ and ‘Dialogues pages.
